Studies and Financing in the Energy Sector
Time: 14:00 to 15:30
Building: Institute
Hall: Main Hall
At a time when our region is facing crucial energy challenges, it is essential to analyze and understand the trends, opportunities and challenges that will shape the future of our electricity markets.
Latin America and the Caribbean are at an energy crossroads. On the one hand, the region possesses vast renewable resource potential that could drive a transition to cleaner and more sustainable electricity systems. On the other hand, it faces significant challenges in terms of infrastructure, regulation and financing that must be addressed to realize this potential. For example, the level of electricity losses in the region has remained close to 17% over the last three decades, and represents a serious challenge for the sustainability of the sector.

Transforming data into efficiency: Useful Energy Balances
Time:16:00 to 17:30
Building: Institute
Hall: Hall 2
It aims to share experiences and lessons learned in the development of Useful Energy Balance (BEU, for its acronym in Spanish) projects in Ecuador, Panama and Paraguay, as part of the European Union’s EUROCLIMA+ program. It will address how the demand for energy services, such as lighting and HVAC, translates into final energy demand through conversion devices and technologies, and how this influences energy efficiency. The BEU is presented as a crucial tool to identify opportunities for improvement in energy efficiency along the supply chain, from primary supply to final consumption. The discussion will focus on the challenges and benefits of implementing the BEU, highlighting its potential to optimise energy conservation programmes in key sectors, and the considerations needed to carry out these projects effectively and cost-efficiently

Nuclear Generation 4.0
Time:16:00 to 17:30
Building: Institute
Hall: Hall 1
The objective of this discussion roundtable is to analyze the opportunities and challenges of the development of the nuclear sector in Latin America in the context of decarbonization and the transition to cleaner energy sources. With countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Mexico operating and expanding their nuclear capacity, and increasing intraregional cooperation in research, the crucial role of nuclear energy and, in particular, Small Modular Reactors (SMR) will be discussed. The advantages of SMRs will be analyzed, such as their ability to access remote areas with lower capital costs, and address challenges related to operational security in remote areas, integration into local distribution networks, and financing and operating models.
