Keynote: Innovation and Applied Technology in Demand Decarbonization

Time:11:00 to 12:30

Room: To be confirmed

The objective of this master session is to examine how innovation and technology are transforming the energy sector, analyzing the achievements made and the challenges to be faced in the search for a more sustainable and efficient energy future. Changes in energy production, distribution and consumption driven by technological advances will be explored, as well as the evolution of business models towards greater flexibility and citizen participation, with the proliferation of prosumers. The roundtable will also address the significant challenges for Latin America and the Caribbean, such as the need for substantial investments, the adaptation of obsolete infrastructures, cybersecurity, and the search for universal access to energy in conditions of justice and equity, highlighting the crucial role of innovation and the adoption of technologies suitable for the region.

Regional Forum on Universal Energy Access

Time: 14:00 to 15:30

Room: To be confirmed

The objective of this discussion roundtable is to address the challenges and opportunities to achieve universal access to energy in Latin America and the Caribbean, where approximately 16 million people still lack electricity and many more face irregular supply. Despite recent advances, the diverse geography and limited infrastructure in rural areas and isolated communities present significant challenges. Innovative and sustainable solutions, such as renewable energy and microgrids, will be explored, and the importance of political commitment and international collaboration will be highlighted. The panel will discuss the progress of OLADE’s Technical Group, composed of experts from 17 countries, which will focus on diagnosing the current situation, identifying necessary national actions, and ensuring that access to energy is clean, affordable and equitable, considering gender equity aspects and aligning with the sustainable development goals for 2030.

Biofuels: public-private interaction and new technologies

Time: 14:00 to 15:30

Room: To be confirmed

The objective of this panel is to propose a dialogue between the public and private sectors with the expectations, roles and degrees of freedom of public policies for the development of biofuels as a tool to decarbonize the land transport sector. At the same time, it will seek to discuss how public policies could influence (positively or negatively) the development of emerging technologies to decarbonize sectors such as aviation through the SAF.

Nuclear 4.0 & SMR

Time:16:00 to 17:30

Room: To be confirmed

The objective of this discussion roundtable is to analyze the opportunities and challenges of the development of the nuclear sector in Latin America in the context of decarbonization and the transition to cleaner energy sources. With countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Mexico operating and expanding their nuclear capacity, and increasing intraregional cooperation in research, the crucial role of nuclear energy and, in particular, Small Modular Reactors (SMR) will be discussed. The advantages of SMRs will be analyzed, such as their ability to access remote areas with lower capital costs, and address challenges related to operational security in remote areas, integration into local distribution networks, and financing and operating models.
