Nuclear energy is experiencing renewed momentum globally, positioning itself as a key pillar in the transition toward low-emission energy systems. In Latin America and other regions of the Global South, interest in this clean and reliable source is growing, driven by technological developments such as small modular reactors and the need to diversify energy matrices. This session will analyze the strategic role of nuclear energy in the decarbonization of the electricity sector, its contribution to energy security, and the opportunities it offers to achieve net-zero emissions goals. The challenges of investment, regulation, and public acceptance that accompany this nuclear renaissance will also be addressed. What political, regulatory, and social conditions must be aligned for nuclear energy to consolidate itself as a viable solution in Latin America and the Caribbean?
