Session

Building a Common Framework for Methane Emissions in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)

Topic: Decarbonization
Session information

At the global level, countries and companies are advancing in defining and implementing actions to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. An increasing number of stakeholders are joining international alliances and cooperation platforms to strengthen their commitments, foster investment, and accelerate transformations that catalyze climate action.
In this context, Latin America positions itself as an international benchmark in regulatory governance, standing out for the participatory and coordinated approach it has adopted. The region has demonstrated leadership by advancing efforts to engage stakeholders from the public sector, parliament, private sector, and international cooperation in the development of regulatory frameworks for methane emissions, as well as in promoting enabling conditions for their implementation.
With this purpose, the Latin America and Caribbean Methane Emissions Observatory (OEMLAC) is progressing in the consolidation of multi-stakeholder networks that foster knowledge and experience exchange to close gaps in governance, financing, and implementation. Meanwhile, the Global Methane Hub, as the main sponsor of OEMLAC and a key global actor, plays a fundamental role in driving ambitious climate action on methane through support for public policies, technologies, and effective regulatory frameworks.
This session, co-organized by OEMLAC and the Global Methane Hub, will explore opportunities and challenges for building a common policy framework for the measurement, reporting, and regulation of methane emissions in Latin America and the Caribbean. It will also analyze relevant international cases and seek to consolidate a shared regional vision that strengthens regulatory capacities, promotes cooperation, and guides countries towards standards aligned with global best practices.
