Session

1st Latin American and Caribbean Mining and Energy Forum

Topic: Energetic Security and Financing for Sustainable Transition
Session information

The Latin American and Caribbean Mining and Energy Forum was created as a space for dialogue to strengthen coordination between the region's energy and mining sectors. In Latin America and the Caribbean, more than half of the ministries responsible for energy also have jurisdiction over mining, reflecting an institutional reality that offers valuable opportunities to build common agendas, share experiences, and promote more integrated planning.

In a region that concentrates significant mineral resources and has one of the cleanest electricity mixes in the world, coordination between both sectors is increasingly relevant to attract investment, develop infrastructure, and take advantage of the opportunities associated with the energy transition. In fact, the mining sector already accounts for nearly 9% of regional electricity consumption, and various scenarios project that this demand could grow to 62% over the next decade. Energy planning cannot ignore the mining sector, just as mining development requires a reliable, competitive, and sustainable energy infrastructure.

This first edition of the Forum will be dedicated to analyzing how to accelerate the development of strategic mining projects, how to strengthen the link between energy and mining to improve regional competitiveness, and how to develop value chains associated with critical minerals that allow for capturing greater economic value for Latin America and the Caribbean.
