Dr. Luis Huerta Torchio is the Executive Director of the Chilean Nuclear Energy Commission (CCHEN). He is a theoretical physicist and holds a PhD in Physics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. His research has been published in the fields of high-energy physics, quantum systems, topological materials, and plasma physics. He has also conducted work in scientific museography.
From 2006 to 2020, he served as a professor at the University of Talca, where he founded the PhD Program in Applied Sciences and held the position of Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs. He has been a researcher at the Center for Scientific Studies (CECS) in Valdivia and was one of the founders of the Interactive Museum of Mirador (MIM), where he served as Scientific Director, contributing to its planning, design, and implementation through to its inauguration.
Among his distinctions, he was elected Director of the Latin American Center for Physics (CLAF) from 2020 to 2024, an intergovernmental organization sponsored by UNESCO. In 2025, he was awarded the Medal of the Chilean Physical Society in recognition of his contribution to the development of the discipline.
He is currently leading a modernization process at CCHEN, aimed at strengthening its scientific and technological impact, fostering both knowledge creation and its applications for national development.
