This session will address the opportunities and challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean in harnessing the potential of geothermal energy and offshore wind as part of their energy diversification strategy.
The region, located in areas with high geothermal potential such as the Pacific Ring of Fire and with extensive coastlines suitable for offshore wind development, is at a key moment to boost unconventional sources. New technologies, innovative financing models, and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels are paving the way for integrating these sources into energy-intensive sectors such as mining and green hydrogen production. However, scaling up these projects requires overcoming barriers such as development risks, permitting processes, environmental concerns, and social acceptance. What regulatory, financial, and social frameworks are necessary to reduce risks and increase acceptance of these projects?
