Distributed generation is transforming electricity systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, driving a transition to more resilient, decentralized, and cleaner grids. As the share of renewable energies in the electricity matrix grows, countries in the region face the challenge of modernizing their infrastructures to efficiently integrate these dispersed resources, while ensuring security and quality of supply.

The transition requires overcoming significant technical and regulatory barriers. With the increasing electrification of the economy and regional climate commitments, the critical question is whether grid architectures will evolve quickly enough to harness the potential of distributed generation or whether they will become obsolete in the face of the speed of technological and societal changes. What are the technical and regulatory barriers facing the region?
